The essence of energy-efficient and passive construction is to minimize energy losses, but there are some differences between both standards.

Passive houses are houses that are perfectly insulated and protected against heat loss, whose annual demand for primary energy, used for heating and lighting of rooms, hot water preparation and powering of appliances does not exceed 15 kWh/m2. Such a building is therefore characterized by the highest thermal insulation, and its construction, adopted architectural and material solutions as much as possible exclude the formation of places through which more heat escapes from the interior.

Energy-efficient buildings have somewhat less stringent requirements – annual primary energy demand should be between 30 and 60 kWh/m2. Thus, the thermal insulation of such a building may feature slightly lower parameters than in the case of a passive house, just as wider architectural, material, construction and heating options and solutions are allowed.

To minimize heat loss in both standards, the installed woodwork is important, as up to 30% of energy can escape from the interior of the house through leaky windows and doors.

What may be surprising to many people is that a large number of glazings are present in the construction of passive houses, both in the form of windows and glass facades. Glass surfaces are mainly placed on the south side, in order to maximize the use of solar energy to heat the house. On the north side, however, they are kept to a minimum, To prevent heat loss.
